Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the United States is a performer and actress. in film, music and television, Queen Latifah has received the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nominations, and nods to the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, as well as Rita who was a educator in Irvington High School. Latifah's parents separated when she aged 10 years old. Latifah grew up within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and compassionate in Arabic was handed to her her cousin when she was only eight. Latifah, who was 5'10" tall power forward on the high school team, was always a tall girl. In a school production, she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah became a beatboxer for the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was a part of in the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of a group of MCs led by producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded an audition for the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the tune. The singer signed Latifah and dropped her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
