Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

The jazz musician Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born on February 20, 1937, in Ohio, Chillicothe. She was the daughter of iron worker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as a housekeeper. Nancy was the youngest out of 6 siblings. Her father's love of music and his collection of records at home were a huge influence on Nancy as a young girl. As young as four, Nancy knew her destiny was to be a performer. The talent she had developed was discovered through singing in the church choir. When she was 15 and had a chance to win a talent show on TV and was able to regularly appear on the Skyline Melodies Tv Show while still in High School. In the same year, she began to perform at nightclubs. Nancy was kicked out of Central State University in Ohio after being matriculating for a full year. Her first record was recorded in 1956 by the Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The band was on tour with her between 1956 and 1958. Nancy started recording with Dot Records in 1956, as part of the group. Cannonball addederley recommended that she relocate to New York for her career after which she moved in The Big Town. In just a few months she had been singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company saw her singing and instantly agreed to sign her. The contract was signed the label Capitol records in 1960, and she made her debut that year by releasing the single. Guess Who You Saw Today. The records she released were also successful. Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Initially focusing on blues and rhythm under the influence of Adderley, she shifted away from R&B and began to embrace jazz and torch songs. Nancy Wilson's collaboration in 1962 in 1962 with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top of the charts, and the year 1963 saw her scoring her first hit Tell Me the Truth. It was this performance that brought her to the stage at the New York Coconut Grove in 1963. It was the most crowded in America's nightclub.
