Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson who was the Chillicothe ironworker on 20 February 1937. She was the daughter of Lillian Ryan worked as household helper. Nancy was the first out of six kids. The father of Nancy was a musician and would play records in the family. This was a major influence upon her growing up. When she was four, she knew she would like to become a musician. She discovered her talent for music through participating in choirs of the church. In high school when she started appearing regularly in Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when won the TV talent show. At nightclubs, she began performing at the age of fifteen. Nancy graduated high school at 17 and attended Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a full year. She then dropped out to pursue a career as a professional musician. She recorded her first record with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. They was on tour from 1956 until 1958. Nancy began recording for Dot Records in 1956, when she was part of the band. Cannonball Adderley encouraged her to move to New York to further her career, and she moved there to The Big Town at the end of 1959. Within a month she got an offer to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx the place where her agent heard her and signed her. He signed a contract with Capitol Records in the year 1960. she debuted the following year by releasing the single. Guess who saw today. Her albums were a hit and Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Adderley encouraged her to shift away from R&B to music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Nancy Wilson's 1962 collaboration with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top of the charts, and in 1963 she scored her first hit Tell Me the Truth. She was offered a job at the New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's most prestigious club.
