Hitchcock plays with his timing in The Birds. He introduces the character Daniels Brenner in the film long before any activity. This heightens the suspense. Some memorable roles are that are played by Jessica Tandy as Brenner's mother, Lydia, and by Suzanne Pleshette as his former girlfriend Annie. The screenplay was adapted by a popular author Evan Hunter, better known as his nickname Ed McBain, from a novella written by Daphne Du Maurier. Hitchcock employed electronic sound effects instead of a musical score with great success. Hitchcock looked into a real-life event of a shearwater attack that was sooty located in Capitola, Calif. in 1961. It was believed to be aggressive due to the fact that they had consumed poisoned anchovies by diatoms.
